 Hi Katrina,

I wanted to reach out and thank you for the respectful way that you wrote the  October 21, 2016 article about our son, Ryan Abele.

There is an area that we want to provide additional information – the extent of the  trauma. Had he only been unable to walk, we would have gotten him a wheel chair.  Had he only been unable to talk, we would have taught him sign language.

Our son suffered severe head trauma. He suffered a fractured skull. The brain was  injured due to the impact as well as the rapid pressure build-up within the head  from the bleeding and swelling. The surgeon performed an emergency  craniectomy within minutes of arriving at the hospital to relieve the pressure.

Our son was unconscious when he was transported to the hospital and never  regained consciousness. The damage left him unable to regulate his body  temperature. He was covered with a cooling blanket and had ice packs around his  chest. He was unable to breathe on his own and was on a ventilator. He was on  medication to regulate his blood pressure while we prayed for the remote chance  of a miraculous recovery.

After several days, the MRI confirmed the extent of the destruction and the doctors  verified that his condition was not recoverable. After immense prayer and  consultation, his parents decided to transition him from full treatment to what the  hospital terms ‘comfort measures’.

Yesterday, October 27, we gathered at his side and the ventilator was removed.  Ryan passed away within minutes.

Your paper is our home town paper and I wanted you to receive a more complete  picture of the extent of the head trauma and medical process. Thank you again for  the respectful and caring tone in your writing.
