Similarities:

 

Both were involved in the pledge process.

Both were at planned fraternity events designed to mess with pledges.

Both involved ridiculous and dangerous amounts of alcohol provided by the fraternity to underage pledges.

Both involved groups of pledges instructed to drink hard alcohol by active fraternity members.

Both involved activities required prior to initiation or affiliation with an organization.

Both were clear cases of hazing.

Differences:

​

At Penn State they have video evidence of what took place in the fraternity house.

At UNR there was no video evidence found.

​

At Penn State they have incriminating text messages recovered from the phones of the fraternity members.

At UNR the UNRPD failed to obtain a single fraternity member's phone despite repeated requests and clear evidence that there are text messages related directly to the case. 

​

The State of Pennsylvania is enforcing the law and bringing criminal charges.

The State of Nevada failed to bring any charges - not for hazing - not even for furnishing alcohol to minors.

​

The State of Pennsylvania is shining light on the idiocy, dangers and consequences of fraternity hazing.

The State of Nevada is proving that well connected and influential individuals can stifle the criminal justice process.
